types of therapy and how to find the right fit
Therapy is available for children ages 2 and up, teens, young adults and their families as well as postpartum mothers and couples.
What is CBT?
CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Therapies that use a Cognitive Behavioral approach are grounded in the theory that altering the child’s thoughts and behaviors leads to an improvement in functioning. CBT involves teaching the child concrete skills, and having the child practice these skills outside of session. CBT can be used to treat anxiety, depression, trauma, and other areas in which children, teens and young adults struggle
What is Evidence-Based Treatment?
Evidence-based treatments are therapies that have been developed through the use of research. If a type of therapy is called an Evidence Based Treatment it means that research has shown that the therapy is effective in treating the problem it was designed to address. Many Evidence-Based Treatments use a CBT approach, such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Coping Cat for Anxious Youth. Some use behavioral approaches such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), PCIT Adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)
What is Play Therapy?
Children often feel most comfortable communicating through play. Play based techniques can be employed in CBT, and play therapy can be used as its own way of helping a child work through stressors.
What is Behavior Management?
Behavior Management involves teaching parents or caregivers strategies for managing a child's behavior. These can be through the use of behavior charts, privilege loss, time out, rewards and more. Therapies such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) teach these skills hands on.
What is Family Therapy?
Family Therapy involves multiple family members attending sessions together to work on improving family functioning.
