Effective July 16, 2022, the Suicide Prevention Lifeline number will be changing to 988. Crisis services will remain the same and the old number will continue to work. This new number, however, is easier to remember and to share with others.
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death for youth. The 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that almost 18% of youth in Florida seriously considered attempting suicide and almost 9% of adolescents attempted suicide. Recent data suggests that LGBTQ+ and Black youth have experienced an especially pronounced and exponential growth in suicidal risk over the past twenty years.
The Suicide Prevention Lifeline number 988 is available by phone, text or chat. Callers will be connected to trained counselors who will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.
